Prenatal Yoga includes adaptation of Yoga poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to help ease the discomforts of pregnancy and prepare the body for childbirth. Women who already regularly practiced Yoga before their pregnancy should also switch to prenatal Yoga in order to learn adaptations and postures that are safe for them and the baby.
One of the key benefits of Prenatal Yoga is to learn how to breathe deeply (ujjayi) and relax, what becomes very handy when facing labour and childbirth. In addition, according to a report in the April 2009 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter, rigorous studies have found scientific proof that yoga helps the body deal with stress by slowing heart and breathing rates and lowering blood pressure.
