Ashtanga Yoga or Power Yoga is a vigorous type of Yoga exercise based on Hatha Yoga. Each pose is linked to the next through a series of connecting movements called vinyasa, this creating heat to the body and leading to more flexibility. Smooth, deep diaphragmatic breathing (ujjayi), gaze down the nose into the chest (drishti) and locks (bandhas) are synchronized with the movements:
- The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing: the synchronization of movement and breathing heats the blood, improves its circulation, relieves joint pain and removes toxins from the internal organs. The sweating helps carrying the impurities out of the body.
- The purpose of ujjayi is to support the stretching of the body and to strengthen and purify the nervous system by increasing the internal heat or fire.
- The purpose of drishti is to purify and stabilize the functioning of the mind
- The purpose of bandhas is to unlock pranic energy and direct it into the 72,000 energy channels (nadi) of the subtle body.
Ashtanga yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga” referring to the path of eight spiritual practices to reach internal purification: moral codes (Yama), self-purification and study (Niyama), postures (Asana), breath control (Pranayama), sense control (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana), and absorption into the Universal (Samadhi).
