Anusara means “flowing with grace”, “going with the flow” or “following your heart”. Anusara Yoga is based on the Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness; it is heart-oriented, inspiring spiritually and grounded in a deep knowledge of body alignment. Anusara Yoga poses are based on the Hatha Yoga postures practiced globally.
While Anusara Yoga lessons are light hearted and playful, poses or Asanas are subject to a set of concise alignment principles called the “Universal Principles of Alignment™”. These include five main alignment principles, which are applied sequentially in each pose: Opening to Grace, Muscular Energy, Inner Spiral, Outer Spiral, and Organic Energy:
- Opening to Grace is about initiating the Asana with an intentional approach of softness or humility by aligning one’s heart’s intention with one’s spirit and physical being.
- Muscular Energy establishes physical strength and stability.
- Inner Spiral Energy enables to expand energy from the feet to the pelvis and waist whereas Outer Spiral Energy redirects it inward, back down through the tail bone, the legs and the feet.
- Finally, Organic Energy is an outward energy that runs through the body’s outer core increasing expansion, flexibility and freedom in the pose.
